How to Attempt Writing Task 2 in the IELTS Test

3. Write a Strong Introduction

Your introduction sets the tone for your essay and is an opportunity to engage the examiner right away. Start by paraphrasing the question prompt instead of copying it word for word. Use synonyms and rephrase the sentence structure to demonstrate your lexical resource. Follow this up by clearly stating your position on the issue, whether you agree, disagree, or hold a neutral stance.

For example: Prompt: “Some people believe that social media has a detrimental effect on personal relationships. To what extent do you agree or disagree?” Introduction: Social media platforms have become an integral part of modern life, yet their influence on personal connections has been a topic of much debate. While some argue that social media damages interpersonal relationships, I believe that its impact is largely positive when used mindfully.

4. Develop Coherent Body Paragraphs

Each body paragraph should focus on one main idea that supports your thesis. Begin the paragraph with a clear topic sentence that summarizes the point you will discuss. Follow this by providing detailed explanations and examples to strengthen your argument.

For example, if you are discussing the benefits of social media for relationships, you might say: “One of the key advantages of social media is that it allows people to maintain relationships across distances, which would otherwise be difficult in a globalized world. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram provide opportunities for instant communication, keeping family members, friends, and acquaintances in touch, regardless of physical location.”

Remember to use linking words such as “furthermore,” “on the other hand,” “in contrast,” and “therefore” to ensure your ideas flow logically.

5. Craft a Concise Conclusion

Your conclusion should not introduce any new ideas. Instead, summarize the main points and restate your opinion or final takeaway. This is your final opportunity to make an impact on the examiner, so make sure to restate your thesis clearly.

For example: “In conclusion, while social media does have some drawbacks, its ability to connect people and foster communication outweighs the negative effects on personal relationships. Therefore, I believe that social media has a net positive impact on modern interactions.”

6. Time Management

Time is a crucial factor in the IELTS Writing Task 2. You have 40 minutes to write a 250-word essay, so you need to pace yourself. Spend the first 5-7 minutes planning your essay, around 30 minutes writing it, and the last 3-5 minutes reviewing and editing.

7. Edit and Proofread

Once you’ve completed your essay, use the final few minutes to check for grammatical errors, punctuation mistakes, and ensure that you’ve used a range of vocabulary. A clean and error-free essay will always score higher than one filled with careless mistakes.
